The Draeger company was founded in Germany by Dr. Heinrich Draeger. In 1922 Draegerwerk , The Company developed this piece of diving apparatus for diving with a hose , supplied by a pump at the surface. The previously manufactured equipment was known as the hoseless Draeger diving equipment and was suitable for diving to depths of 20 or 40 metres depending on which type of apparatus was used. The hose version was capable of diving to depths of 90-120 metres and although these depths would now be considered on the absolute borderline of normal air diving it was successfully used on a number of tasks. Depths of 140-180 metres could be achieved if the oxygen level was reduced to 12%.

THE DIVERS EQUIPMENT IS AS FOLLOWS
The equipment comprises a canvas diving suit, neck entry with a rubber collar and attached mitts. The breastplate attaches to the collar by 3 bolts, and the rubber flange is sandwiched between the breastplate flange and the helmet flange making the outfit completely watertight. The shoes are made of leather and cast iron and the diver wears a belt from which is attached a knife. There is a back weight and a chest weight in which there are stored 2 high pressure cylinders .These are operated by way of a valve on the divers chest and connected to the helmet with a hose . The point of this contrivance is to supply the diver with enough air to reach the surface should the main supply fail . An additional weight is fitted to the weight strap and is located between the divers legs . This is the sitting weight . Air is pumped from the surface through an air hose which is connected to the back of the helmet. The pressure in the helmet is slightly higher than the surrounding water and the expired air is expelled through an exaust valve which can be manually operated from inside the helmet.. Communication is through a cable connected to a receiver and a speaker inside the helmet. The helmet is made of spun copper and in this case the breastplate is coated with a preservative coating to help prevent corrosion. There is a removable front window which screws into the helmet just before the diver submerges. The total weight of the equipment excluding the air hose and the telephone cable is 85Kgs.

THE DIVERS EQUIPMENT IS AS FOLLOWS
This is a Mark V US Navy pattern diving Helmet. Made by Morse in 1944 , this actual one previously owned by Salvage Diver Jack Daley, photo available upon request.
Hard Hat outfit best suited for arduous bottom oriented work, later replaced by the Mk 12.  Mk V helmet comprises a spun copper bonnet with bronze fittings . It has 4 windows or view ports and is equipped with an inlet and exhaust valve , both of the non-return type.  The main view port at the front known as the faceplate is hinged and secured for diving with a bevelled wing nut. The bonnet or helmet is secured to the breastplate with a large screw thread.  The diving suit is made up of vulcanised rubber and a heavy rubber collar forms the junction with the breastplate and this makes a watertight seal making the whole outfit what is known as a closed dress apparatus.  The weight belt is used to overcome the diver’s positive buoyancy when in the water.  The diver’s shoes give protection and added weight and help the diver maintain an upright position.  The diver’s knife has one blade edge and a cutting edge and is secured in its brass sheath with a screw thread.  The whole outfit weighs approximately 198lbs.

THE DIVERS EQUIPMENT IS AS FOLLOWS
This is a Siebe Gorman & Co Ltd. 6 bolt diving helmet designed by RH Davis and is known as the British Admiralty type.  It was designed to be an improvement on the 8 bolt and 12 bolt type. There are only 2 clamping straps or brailles.  There are raised ribs on the rubber suit collar which fit into the recesses in the underneath of the clamping straps. The helmet is made of copper with a tin coating to preserve the copper.  The helmet is connected to the breastplate with an interupted thread , and locked into position with a locking pin.The glass is half inch thick and may unscrew to speak to the diver.  There are windows or lights to the side , protected by brass grills. Air enters the helmet at the back and expired air is released through an exhaust valve to the side.  There is a telephone connection also at the rear.At the front there is a 'spitcock' The diver may take in water to wash the front glass if it should become fogged. It may also be used as an exhaust and a sampling point for the diver's air in the helmet.  There are small brass eyes on the top of the helmet used for lashing the air and safety line. The diver is wearing brass soled boots , each weighing 18 lbs. The divers weights each weighing 40lbs help to keep the diver on the sea bed.  The divers knife is held in a brass scabbard around the waist. The diver is wearing a suit made of solid rubber sheeting between layers of twill with a collar of thick vulcanised rubber. The suit has tight fitting cuffs to prevent water entering the suit.
