Spain, victim of this great crime, we report about, a few days after an immense accident:
In the harbour of Santander a tradingship, the Cabo-Machichaco, caught fire. Immediately, the crew of the Spanish liner Alphonsus XIII rushed in for assistance. The crew of both ships tried to save the injured when a new terrible disaster hit the rescuers. The hold of the ship was completely loaded with parrafin and dynamite, intended for smugglers. Some of them tried to escape but they were too late, a big explosion followed, throwing the ship high in the sky. Houses on the qay caught fire after barrels with parrafin were blasted away by the explosion, launched like bombs on the small town. Many victims were smashed as if their body’s were shot by a machinegun. Estimations are that more than 1000 people lost their life. Many chests with dynamite broke up by the explosion causing a great threath for the rescuers. On the bottom of the harbour fearless divers did their work but despite their immovable courage many of them were moved by this heartless terror.

In de haven van Santander vatten een handelsschip, de Cabo-Machichaco vlam. Onmiddellijk hierna voelde de bemanning van de Spaanse oceaanstomer Alphonsus XIII zich geroepen te helpen. De zeelui van beide schepen probeerden gewonden te redden toen een nieuwe verschrikkelijke ramp zich voltrok over de redders. Het ruim van het schip dat men wilde redden was geheel gevuld met vaten petroleum en dynamiet, bestemd voor smokkelaars. Er waren er die trachtten te ontsnappen maar zij waren te laat, een grote explosie ontstond waardoor het schip vele meters de lucht in vloog. Huizen op de kade vlatte vlam nadat de vaten petroleum als projectielen uit het schip waren gevlogen, gelanceerd als bommen op het stadje. Vele lichamen werden verbrijzeld alsof een soort mitrailleur de lichamen beschoot. Men schat het aantal slachtoffers op meer als 1000. Veel kisten met dynamiet waren uiteengespat en veroorzaakte een groot gevaar voor de reddingswerkers die op zoek waren naar de lichamen. Er werkten onverschrokken helmduikers op de bodem van de haven maar ondanks hun onverzettelijke moed werden veel van hen gegrepen door deze verschrikking en harteloosheid.
