These illustrations, the front- and back page of a newspaper, are dedicated to the Pluviose disaster. The Pluviose was a sub that sunk. The text Morts pour la France shows that it is concidered as a national disaster.

With the illustration at the front page we well express our compassion to those who, in sight of the harbour of Calais gave their life in the line of duty. This astonishing illustration attends the memory of their sacrifice. Though underwaternavigation is in practice cinse many years, this is the thirth catastroph. But dispite these serious accidents, the confidence and courage of these sailors has not diminished. This newspaper reproduces a few caracteristic words during these days:

A summary of a letter, adressed to the parents of a sailor of the submarine "Cherbourg":

"It is", according to this brave sailor and in connection with the loss of the Pluviose; "an unfortunate arrival for those who lost their lives. But dispite these terrible accidents, the moral of the sailors is not influenced. I have, like yesterday, as much faith to dive with any submarine and I can assure that every sailor thinks the same".

This is the device of the Navy: Devotion, duty and sacrifice. Our country should be proud of these men.

Deze illustraties, de voor- en achterpagina van een krant, zijn gewijd aan het zinken van de Pluviose, een Franse onderzeeer. Met de tekst Morts pour la France wordt duidelijk gemaakt dat er sprake is van een nationale ramp.

Met de illustratie op de voorpagina willen wij onze sympathie uitspreken naar diegenen die, in het zicht van de haven van Calais, zijn verongelukt voor hun land. Deze verbazingwekkende illustratie begeleid de herinnering aan hun opoffering. Hoewel de onderwater navigatie al jaren in praktijk gebracht wordt, is dit de derde catastrofe. Maar goed, ondanks al deze ernstige ongelukken is het vertrouwen en de moed van deze zeelieden niet verminderd. De krant reproduceert deze laatste dagen enkele karakteristieke woorden:

Een uittreksel van een brief geadresseerd aan de ouders van een bemanningslid van de onderzeeer "Cherbourg". "Het zijn", zoals deze moedige zeeman zegt in verband met het verlies van de Pluviose, "de verkeerden die ongelukkigerwijs arriveren. Maar deze ongelukken, hoe treurig ze ook zijn, beinvloeden niet het moraal van de bemanningen. Ik heb, net zoals gisteren, nog evenveel vertrouwen om te duiken met welke onderzeeer dan ook en ik kan u verzekeren dat elk bemanningslid er hetzelfde over denkt".

Hier is de lijfspreuk van onze marine: Toewijding, plicht en opoffering. Ons land moet trots zijn op deze mannen.
